April 2008 Meeting
Our monthly meeting was held on April 15th at Bass Pro Shops in Concord NC. We had a great turnout with a total of 28 people present.
Capt. Joe Shute of Altlantic Beach spoke to the club about inshore fishing with great informaton on various methods of targeting Cobia & Red Drum.
Cobia Fishing
Catch them either sight fishing or soaking
bait on the bottom.
With average size fish around 40 lbs. you need equipment to handle large fish.
Joe usually fishes 3 baits fished about 40-50 feet apart, and fishes with
the reel in freespool with the clicker on.
He advocates letting the fish run before coming tight and setting the hook.
Joe likes to cast a hoagie or slug-go type
bait when fishing over artificial reefs and has caught a variety of species
casting these lures.
He likes fishing the shipping channel as well as the traditional spots behind
shackleford banks, with an emphasis on fishing the deepest holes
in an area. Baits should be checked every 5 to 10 minutes! If you're not losing
bait, you're in the wrong place.
Turtles and Big rays are often accompanied by Cobia - always check them out.
Big Drum fishing
Prime time is Middle of August thru Sept.
Fish are found on structure in the Pamlico sound, typically near drop offs.
The rougher it is, the better the bite. Joe uses the owen lupton rig for drum
and generally fishes 6 rods at a time with
whole pogeys hooked through the bottom lip.
Fish average 25-50 lbs. He chums continously with cut up pogeys.
Small Drum Fishing
Small drum will hit a variety of baits including
spinner baits, spoons, plastics and cut bait. They are available year round
and can
be caught under a popping float with shrimp imitations about 18 down. These
baits are fished around oyster points on a high falling tide.
A white gulp shrimp under a popping float, fished slow is the ticket. Always
cast upcurrent and let the bait come back to the boat.
Small swim baits with scent inbedded are also great producers. Use a slow
steady retrieve to just keep it off the bottom.
